Speak to a Regulated UK Immigration Solicitor
By Howard Wilson, Editor · Updated 30 September 2026. ILR Calculator UK is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. See how we work with law firms.
Quick answer: if your ILR or citizenship case is not straightforward (for example absences over the limit, a gap in lawful residence, a previous refusal or a complex visa history), a regulated immigration solicitor can review it before you pay a £3,226 fee. Use the form below and we will pass your details, with your consent, to one SRA-regulated UK immigration law firm, who will contact you.
When an immigration solicitor is worth it
- Your absences are over, or close to, the 180-day limit in any 12 months.
- You have a gap in lawful residence, overstayed, or made a late application.
- You have had a previous refusal or need an administrative review.
- You switched visas and are unsure whether the time combines.
- Your income evidence may not meet the financial requirement.
- You are applying on the 10-year long residence or private life route.
- Your ILR has lapsed and you need a returning resident visa.
If your case is simple, our free ILR calculator, document checklist and application guide may be all you need.
Solicitor or IAA-registered adviser: what is the difference?
| Immigration solicitor | IAA-registered adviser | |
|---|---|---|
| Regulated by | Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) | Immigration Advice Authority (IAA, formerly the OISC) |
| Can advise on ILR | Yes | Yes, within the level they are registered for |
| Check they are regulated | SRA solicitors register | Find an immigration adviser (GOV.UK) |
| Complaints | Legal Ombudsman | Immigration Advice Authority |
Under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 it is a criminal offence to give immigration advice unless you are regulated or exempt. Always check an adviser on the relevant register before you pay. Our referral service introduces you only to law firms regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. IAA-registered advisers are not allowed to pay for referrals under their Code of Standards, so if you would prefer one, search the GOV.UK register of immigration advisers directly; it is free.
How our referral service works
- You complete the short form below. It takes about a minute.
- We pass your request to one SRA-regulated UK immigration law firm we work with. We never sell your details to multiple firms.
- The firm contacts you, usually within two working days, to discuss your situation and explain its fees.
- You decide whether to instruct them. There is no obligation.

Who will contact me?
One SRA-regulated UK immigration law firm that we work with: a firm of solicitors regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
Does ILR Calculator UK give legal advice?
No. We publish free tools and general information. Only a regulated solicitor or IAA-registered adviser can advise on your individual case.
Do you get paid for referrals?
We may receive a fee from the firm we introduce you to. It does not affect our free tools or guides, and regulated firms must tell you about any referral arrangement.
What should I prepare before the call?
Your passport, eVisa details, a list of absences with dates, previous Home Office decision letters and a short summary of your concern. Do not send documents until you have agreed terms with the firm.
