How We Work With Law Firms

By Howard Wilson, Editor · Updated 30 September 2026. ILR Calculator UK is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. See how we work with law firms.

In short: ILR Calculator UK is an independent publisher of free ILR tools and guides. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice. If you ask us to, we introduce you to one SRA-regulated UK immigration law firm, and we may receive a fee from that firm for the introduction. This page explains exactly how that works.

What we do and do not do

We doWe do not
Publish free calculators and general guides reviewed against the Immigration Rules and GOV.UKGive legal advice or assess your individual case
Pass your details to one regulated firm, only with your consentSell or share your details with multiple firms
Check that partner firms are regulatedCharge you anything for the introduction
Keep our guides editorially independentLet partner firms write, edit or approve our guides

Which firms we work with

  • Firms of immigration solicitors regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, checked on the SRA register.
  • We do not take referral fees from advisers registered with the Immigration Advice Authority, because the IAA Code of Standards does not allow them to pay for referrals. If you would prefer an IAA-registered adviser, you can search the GOV.UK register directly.
  • Firms that hold professional indemnity insurance and operate a complaints procedure.
  • We review partner firms regularly and stop working with any firm that does not treat our readers fairly.

How a referral works

  1. You submit the form on our speak to a solicitor page and tick the consent box.
  2. We send your request to one partner firm.
  3. The firm contacts you, explains its fees and confirms any referral arrangement.
  4. You choose whether to instruct the firm. Your contract for legal services is with the firm, not with us.

How we are paid

Our free tools and guides are funded by advertising and, where you ask for an introduction, by referral fees that partner firms may pay us. You do not pay us anything. Regulated firms must tell you about any referral arrangement. Where we ever link to a partner firm in exchange for payment, the link is marked as sponsored.

Editorial independence

Our guides are researched and written independently using the Immigration Rules, GOV.UK guidance and legislation. Partner firms do not pay for, write or approve our content. Read our editorial standards.

Your data

We only share the details you enter in the referral form, and only with one firm, after you give consent. We keep referral requests for up to 12 months and then delete them. Please do not send us criminal record, health or passport details. See our privacy policy for your rights, including how to ask us to delete your data.

Complaints

  • About a solicitor: first use the firm’s complaints procedure, then the Legal Ombudsman.
  • About us or this service: contact us.
